  Sandalwood—or “santal”—is one of the world’s oldest and most precious perfumery ingredients. It’s so precious that the best type, Mysore sandalwood, is now endangered and protected. Don’t worry, no trees were harmed as a result of this bestselling Montale scent, but you’ll see why it’s so beloved. We think it has something to do with the unusual use of salty sea water to temper sandalwood's usual sweetness. Notes include sea water, juniper, sandalwood, and oakmoss. 
• Montale is the creation of Pierre Montale, who worked as an official perfumer for the Saudi royal family before returning to Paris to introduce Western perfume lovers to the rich world of Middle Eastern perfumery ingredients.
• Santal Wood, like all of the oud scents in the Montale line, was inspired by creator Pierre Montale's love of Middle Eastern perfumery.
