Introducing: J-Scent
Capturing millennia of illustrious Japanese culture and history through scent alone might seem like an impossible task. But in 2017, a prestigious fragrance team from Japan decided they would try just that. Almost a decade later, J-Scent is making waves and recounting Japan's history. So we decided to bring them aboard, and sat down with the hardworking team to ask them exactly how they do it.
Meet J-Scent!
Q: How did J-Scent start, and finally come to life?
Founded in 1998, our company, Team Luz, introduced its first in‑house brand in 2004 and has since developed several original fragrance lines. J-Scent was launched in 2017 with the concept of “Scent of Japan, captured in a bottle.”
Today, the collection features more than 30 different fragrances inspired by Japanese aesthetics, unique traditions, cultural heritage, and scents that surround everyday life in Japan.
Since our founding, our products have been manufactured in our in-house factory, reflecting our commitment to craftsmanship as a Japanese perfume house.
Q: Trying to capture Japanese culture in a bottle is quite a lofty goal. How do you go about capturing a place with thousands of years of history? How do you decide?
Our in-house creators, Team Luz, seek out captivating elements and scenes hidden within our daily lives, each guided by their own creative perspective. Through a process of trial and error, the team refines each fragrance to perfection.
What we value most is creating fragrances that express Japan through the eyes of the Japanese. We do not simply craft scent ideas, but create fragrances with narratives that tell a story.
Q: J-Scent makes its fragrances within its own in-house laboratories and factories. Can you tell us about that process and how it’s different from other houses?
At our laboratory, we select raw materials, develop fragrances, and conduct tests to verify safety and quality. The products are manufactured at our in-house factory in Karatsu, Saga Prefecture. Each step—from bulk production and filling, to labeling and shrink-wrapping—is carried out carefully by hand, embodying true Japanese quality.
In Japan, only a very small number of perfume brands operate their own factories, and the number becomes even smaller when it comes to true “maison” fragrances. Almost no brands manufacture their products entirely in their own domestic facilities. In this landscape, having an integrated in‑house production system is one of our greatest strengths and defining characteristics.
Q: The whole line has over thirty different scents, and all are very different from one another, but what’s J-Scent’s signature that ties them all together?
Overseas audiences often associate Japanese fragrances with stereotypical cues such as cherry blossoms, Kabuki, or Mt. Fuji. We move beyond these images and express Japanese culture through fresh perspectives. Inspired by the scenery and everyday life in Japan, J-Scent fragrances evoke a familiar landscape deep within the memories of those who experience them.
A scent created through the eyes of the Japanese transcends borders, cultures, and language. It is not merely a nostalgic scent, but a new kind of fragrance—one that resonates with something universal while touching deeply personal memories. This is the very essence of J‑Scent.
Q: We’re featuring Sumo Wrestler and On A Cloud in our April Subscription Box. What makes these scents special to you?
What kind of scent comes to mind when you hear the name “Sumo Wrestler”? Perhaps the smell of sweat, or the earthy aroma of the dohyo (the clay ring used in sumo wrestling).
In Tokyo, especially in the eastern districts, it is not unusual to encounter sumo wrestlers. This unique aroma comes from "bintsuke-abura" - a special hair wax used by sumo wrestlers to shape their distinctive topknots. Its classic and oriental scent perfectly embodies the quiet dignity of a sumo wrestler walking through the city.
Q: For On A Cloud, imagine a hot summer day in Japan, with fluffy clouds drifting across the sky. You recall a summer day from childhood—running and playing in the countryside, then returning to your grandparents’ home, where they are waiting with refreshing “Ice-Kurin,” a type of traditional ice cream once sold in Japan.
This fragrance captures that moment of pure happiness. Its scent brings back the sweet nostalgia of summer, like gazing up at big, fluffy clouds floating across a bright blue sky.
Q: How long does it take to complete a scent, and how do you know when it’s “done”?
The time required to create a fragrance varies depending on the theme and the direction the scent is meant to express. Each creation follows a different process, so the time required varies for each fragrance. What matters most is whether the fragrance ultimately captures the world we set out to create.
We continue refining each version until the intended theme emerges naturally from the fragrance. A creation is considered complete when its scent and story come together and the final name is decided.
Q: What’s the best, and the hardest thing, about being an independent fragrance brand with a small team?
The best thing is the speed at which we can create fragrances. Small discoveries and everyday inspirations can quickly be translated into scent, discussed within the team, refined into blends, and brought to life. This agility is a major advantage in our creative process.
The hardest part is that our work extends far beyond fragrance creation. We also handle manufacturing, quality control, and international shipping from Japan to the rest of the world. We do not have the large-scale production systems that major companies do, so we place great importance on approaching each step with care and building our products with intention and craftsmanship.
Q: What’s one thing you wish more people knew about J-Scent?
As a Japanese perfume house, we are committed to being “Made in Japan” and hope to share Japanese perfumes with the world. While J-Scent often attracts attention for its unique names and distinctive scents, what lies behind them is a strong desire to convey the authentic, contemporary culture of Japan.
Our mission is to deliver Japanese culture through fragrance.
Q: What can we expect from J-Scent in the future?
J-Scent will celebrate its 10th anniversary in Japan in 2027. We will continue to take pride in being a Japanese perfume house, exploring new and diverse forms of fragrance expression, while staying true to our original goal of sharing Japanese perfume with the world.
With this unwavering belief as our foundation, we will continue to evolve and share new facets of J-Scent with fragrance lovers around the world.
