How to Use Fragrance Blotters Like a Pro

If you’ve ever visited a perfume counter or taken part in a fragrance workshop, you’ve likely encountered fragrance blotters—those paper strips that play a surprisingly important role in scent evaluation. Often overlooked, blotters are an essential tool for experiencing a scent in its most unaltered form. Free from the influence of skin chemistry, they allow you to study a fragrance’s true structure, from its opening impression to its dry down.

What Are Fragrance Blotters?

Perfume blotters (also called scent strips, test strips or mouillettes) are designed to provide a neutral surface for testing fragrance. Unlike skin, which has its own chemistry and can alter how a scent develops, blotters allow you to experience a perfume as it was originally composed. This makes them an essential tool for both beginners and seasoned fragrance lovers.

Why Use Blotters Instead of Skin?

Testing fragrance on your skin is important—but it shouldn’t be your first step. Blotters allow you to:

  • Evaluate multiple fragrances without overwhelming your senses
  • Compare scents side by side with clarity
  • Experience the true structure of a perfume before skin chemistry changes it

They’re especially helpful when narrowing down favorites before committing to a skin test.

Quick Take: Blotters first—skin second.

Step-by-Step: How to Use a Fragrance Blotter

Using a blotter correctly is simple, but a few small details make a big difference:

1. Spray the Blotter Properly
Hold the blotter by the wider end and spray the fragrance onto the tip of the skinnier end from a few inches away. One to two sprays is enough—more can overwhelm the composition.

2. Let It Settle
Allow a brief pause for the alcohol to dissipate, then inhale gently to experience the top notes as they were composed. Giving it a little wave helps too.

3. Smell Gently
Bring the blotter to your nose and inhale softly by moving the blotter underneath both nostrils. Avoid deep or repeated sniffs, which can fatigue your sense of smell. Waving the blotter will give you a sense of it’s sillage too.

4. Experience the Evolution
A fragrance unfolds over time. Revisit the blotter after a few minutes—and again later—to observe how the scent moves from top notes to middle and base. This evolution is what we call the drydown.

5. Use One Blotter Per Fragrance
Never reuse a blotter. Each scent deserves a clean surface to avoid confusion.

6. Always Label for Clarity
If you’re testing multiple fragrances, write the name on each blotter. This is especially helpful when comparing several options.

7. Lay it Down

When you are done evaluating a fragrance but want to come back to it later, bend up the tip of the blotter before you place it on your table or work surface. This will prevent the scent for scenting your table.

Pro Tip: Don’t Rush the Process

In perfumery, patience is part of the ritual. It’s meant to be experienced, not rushed. A blotter is not just a testing tool—it is an invitation to slow down, to observe, and to experience fragrance with intention.

Final Thoughts

Fragrance blotters may be simple, but they’re one of the most powerful tools for discovering fragrance with intention. Whether you’re exploring new scents or refining your preferences, using blotters helps you slow down, compare thoughtfully, and truly appreciate the artistry of perfume. Need blotters?
