Manly men, listen up: If you're accustomed to men's fragrances that are loaded with woods and "sporty" notes and are given names that include the word "black," get ready for something entirely different. Gold Man is Middle Eastern opulence packed with powerhouse notes like oakmoss and civet, but it plays its cards with remarkable subtlety and confidence. The myrrh and musk dominate early, and the animalic notes that appear in the dry down let off a restrained growl. And hey--there's a reason this one is considered a masterpiece by those in the know, so spend a little extra time if your senses don't initially know what to make of it. It'll pay off. Notes include frankincense, rock rose, lily of the valley, orris, myrrh, musk, cedarwood, sandalwood, patchouli, oakmoss, ambergris, and civet.
    • In 1983, the Sultan of Oman established Amouage in the hopes of reviving the Omani tradition of perfumery. The perfumes often feature traditional Middle Eastern perfume materials. In 2006, Amouage brought on creative director Christopher Chong, who oversaw a complete reinvention of the house and helped to expand the house's international appeal.
