1740 is the birth year of Donatien Alphonse François, the inspiration for this perfume and the man we know as the Marquis de Sade, the sexually liberated writer from whom the word "sadist" originated. History has long raised an eyebrow at his erotic writings, casting him off as an agitator (and worse), but recently a revisionist view of his life and works has taken hold. Whatever view you take of the man, the scent inspired by him is marvelous. 1740 is a seductive, sensual interplay of light and dark, working its way toward the dry down of rich leather and immortelle. Another demonstration of formidable skill by perfumer Gérald Ghislain. Notes include bergamot, davana sensualis, patchouli, coriander, cardamom, cedar, birch, labdanum, leather, vanilla, elemi, and immortelle.
Histoires de Parfums, founded by Gérald Ghislain, is a French perfume house dedicated to creating an olfactive library that tells the stories of "famous characters, raw materials, and mythical years." Ghislain founded Histoires de Parfums in 2000 after completing his training at ISIPCA.
1740 was inspired by the writer known as Marquis de Sade.
