A favorite of the Olfactif editors, this concept of a woody, leather, fougere fragrance may be hard to imagine, but is one that Amouage is more than capable of pulling off with virtuosity. The initial top accord rises up with a dirty-fresh dichotomy that nearly defies description. Wormwood does a lot of work here with its muddy, earthen herbaceousness, dueting with the fresh, cool green of basil and mint, dashed with absinth’s cold spiciness. Frankincense’s characteristic sharpness is subdued, but still takes center stage in the heart, while coiling around rose and lavender absolute for another variation of a dirty-fresh accord in the guise of a deeply smoked, clean floral; tug-of-war in harmony. This beautifully confusing back and forth gives way to one of the most lushly dense base blends you can get your nose on - sweet, earthy, woody, musky, creamy, and leathery, all at the very same time. This fragrance is full of duality and contradiction, but makes unity out of this opposition. While it may or may not end up your ‘thing’, as a perfumista, you owe it to yourself to at least say you’ve experienced it whether man or woman. Notes include basil, mint, wormwood, absinthe, lavender absolute, incense, rose, sandalwood, guaiacwood, vetiver, oakmoss, musk, amber, vanilla, tobacco, and leather.
    • In 1983, the Sultan of Oman established Amouage in the hopes of reviving the Omani tradition of perfumery. The perfumes often feature traditional Middle Eastern perfume materials. In 2006, Amouage brought on creative director Christopher Chong, who oversaw a complete reinvention of the house and helped to expand the house's international appeal.
