‘Ciel’, in French, is translated as ‘sky’ or ‘heaven’. That is truly all one needs to know to contextualize this scent. One whiff, you can almost see clouds floating past, regardless of time of day, or your location. Almost uncharacteristically light for Amouage, this is where freshness and warmth decide they have more in common than not. Watery florals and shyly green leaves embrace with unobtrusive sweetness lent by peach, and demure sensuousness in the combination of rose and jasmine. But wait… can you also detect the far-off whispers of sandalwood and cedar under your feet, buried with glowing amber, as you glance skyward? Le ciel et la terre, in harmony. And it smells as gentle and glorious as you suspected it might. Notes include gardenia, cyclamen, violet leaves, peach, waterlily, rose, jasmine, amber, musk, cedarwood, sandalwood, and frankincense.
In 1983, the Sultan of Oman established Amouage in the hopes of reviving the Omani tradition of perfumery. The perfumes often feature traditional Middle Eastern perfume materials. In 2006, Amouage brought on creative director Christopher Chong, who oversaw a complete reinvention of the house and helped to expand the house's international appeal.
