One of the best parts of Olfactif is getting to know the person behind the brand! It is our pleasure to introduce to you, Maria Mavromatis, the founder of Hercules Man.
Q: How long have you been interested in scent and perfume? How did you start learning about it?
I have been around fragrance pretty much all my life. Both my parents were designer fragrance enthusiasts. I got more serious about fragrance development in 2015 and have been working on the Hercules Man collection since then. The line officially launched in early 2018. Learning was hands-on as well as studying perfumery and botanicals from an aesthetic and safety point of view.
Q: Do you remember the first perfume/cologne you wore? How old were you? It was Obsession and I remember it was a hot perfume at the time. This was a few years after its release. Not sure how old I was, but it was during my high school years.
Q: With your Grecian heritage, how has that influenced your view on perfumery, notes, or aromas in general?
Greece has a rich culture and being originally from Athens, it was self-evident how I wanted to craft my line. The diversity of flora, the complex landscape, as well as the spices and herbs in the Greek culinary tradition provides the muse for my fragrance compositions. Each of my fragrances takes you on a journey to a specific region and locale in Greece.
Q: Your brand is all-natural, using rich botanicals and essences from all around the world. How did you decide on this being the ethos of your brand?
The natural perspective for the brand is actually an extension of my own lifestyle. It’s something I have been into since the late 90's.
Q: Each fragrance purchase from your brand equals 3 trees that will be planted by the National Forest Foundation’s Trees for U.S. program. How did you decide on this program and why is it important to you?
Trees are a vital resource in our ecosystem. They do many great things for us and our planet like filtering pollutants out of the air, storing carbon dioxide and releasing oxygen, and providing a reliable water source, just to name a few. Since my line is botanical, giving back to the Trees for U.S program was a natural (no pun intended) and meaningful choice.
Q: If you could describe your brand in 3 words, what would they be?
Creative, thoughtful, intriguing.
Q: What is one note/scent you keep coming back to? Why?
I love citruses. They are fresh, uplifting, happy scents. There is a citrus component in all of my fragrances. For the home, I make citrus dominant blends for my essential oil diffuser.
Q: What’s next for you and the brand?
This is the launch year, so the main focus is increasing brand visibility plus outreach to buyers and retailers.
