August 2014: The Good Life

August 01, 2014

When we heard that Jeffrey Dame, a longtime perfume industry insider, was about to launch a new line of fragrances, we were intrigued. Dame doesn't make just one-off scents; he develops well-thought-out concepts and creatively builds around them. Such is the idea behind Dame Perfumery Scottsdale, a new line of six fragrances with an American, new-world feel, which will be showcased in a new concept store opening in Scottsdale this fall. I was pretty certain that we would feature one of Jeffrey's scents at some point, because how could we not love one of them?

And then the samples landed on my desk.

We loved them all. Each and every perfume in the new line of six was exactly what Dame had promised: beautiful, fresh, fun, bubbling with optimism, free of complications. The naming convention matches the approach: a top note, a heart note, and a base note, all neatly balanced. He had told us that they would all just smell  good. And they do—really, really good.

Olfactif has never before featured a collection in which all three scents come from the same perfumer, but this was a no-brainer. All six scents are unique, but they complement each other in style. They're brand-new releases that none of our subscribers have experienced. And the full bottles come at an incredible price point: just $65 for 100 ml (which is a pretty fantastic $47 for Olfactif subscribers).

So this month, we're giving subscribers an exclusive preview of three new scents from Dame Perfumery Scottsdale. But we couldn't settle for just three, so we're also offering the other three in a standalone collection that you can purchase for $18 (and you'll receive another $18 credit toward a full bottle when you do).

This month's collection, The Good Life, features:

Pear, Waterlily & Amber An instant favorite for its pairing of bright pear with warm amber. This is a lush, beautiful, day-to-night scent makes any occasion feel a little more special. (Trust us: We've worn it everywhere —morning, noon, and night.)

Mate, Heliotrope & Patchouli If you've ever visited certain parts of South America, you might have tried maté tea, made from the yerba mate plant. That soothing fragrance is what you first smell here, just before the gorgeous heliotrope blooms to life.

Verbena, Freesia & MuskIt's hard to go wrong with the lemony kick of verbena and the peppery elegance of freesia, and they're perfect companions in this composition.

The second collection, which you can purchase directly (and receive another $18 off code toward a full bottle), features the other three releases from Dame Perfumery Scottsdale:

Cassis, Rose & Sandalwood. Berry and rose are paired for a soft, pretty floral scent. The warm, aromatic sandalwood of the dry down lends depth to this cheerful composition.

Peach Blossom, Violet & Vanilla. This is a list of notes that should speak for itself: first bright and sparkling, then luscious thanks to Tahitian vanilla.

Passion Fruit, Orange Blossom & Vetiver. We love a perfume that prominently features a ripe passion fruit note, but what we really love is when it's juxtaposed with grassy, elegant vetiver. (And that doesn't happen often.)

We hope you love this modern American take on perfumery as much as we do. But if you're anything like us, you'll have a hard time choosing a favorite. And we think that's a pretty great problem to have.
