August Picnic, 1976 Sample

Rhubarb is a note in perfumery that is tangy, tart, green and verdant. And we love how Dawn Spencer Hurwitz works with it so very well. Looking back to her childhood, one of her favorite memories is of family picnics alongside her grandfather’s spring-fed pond. It was a summer delicacy to eat fresh rhubarb straight from the garden with ripe strawberries in a small paper cup with a bit of sugar at the bottom to dip the stalks and fruit. A grassy opening gives way quickly to green strawberry notes with a sweetened lemonade twist. As the name implies, it is like eating almost ripe strawberries and tart rhubarb in a grassy field with a glass a lemonade in your hand as the sun shines down upon you. Contrasted with the deep woods of cedar and vetiver in the background, you’ll even get a sense of the glistening water of the spring-fed pond nearby.

Notes include rhubarb, green strawberry accord, green grass, lemonade, virginia cedarwood, sandalwood, galbanum, bergamot, jasmine grandiflorum, leafy green accord, agarwood, and vetiver.
