“As a teenager, I discovered the glamorous movie stars of the '40s, incredibly elegant in their long silk dresses that suggested a mysterious yet complex fragrance… And suddenly, the name aroused, Balkiss, the real name of the Queen of Sheba, a most beautiful, wise, and mysterious woman who, centuries later, is still mesmerizing.” With those words from perfumer Celine Ellena, the classic chypre genre simultaneously gets turned on its head and treated with reverent respect. With opening notes such as blackberry, blackcurrant, and blueberry, and basenotes of cocoa, you may be tempted to think you’re getting a drippingly fruity concoction worthy of the gourmand category. But chypres are all about earthy greenness, and the earthen green violet leaves, patchouli, and heather absorb, wonderfully, all trace of much we would consider sweet. The bouquet of rose, lilac, and lily of the valley create a sense of mystery deep in the heart of the scent. For an added twist, Ellena eliminates the core base notes of a chypre -- oakmoss and cistus labdanum -- opting instead for a focus on the cocoa-green (yes, you read that right) that you find in quality patchouli. Our take? The Queen would be proud. Notes include violet leaves, bergamot, blackberry, blackcurrant, blueberry, Damscus rose, lilac, lily of the valley, patchouli, heather, and cocoa powder.
