In the niche world, where perfumers derive inspiration from just about anything these days, Olfactive Studio's approach feels perfectly pure. The perfumer receives a single photograph as inspiration for a fragrance, and in this case, the photo is of a frame from a video of artist Laurent Segretier's long-distance girlfriend. If you're wondering what a perfumer might make of such a minimalist shot, here's your answer. Perfumer Olivier Cresp (you might know his work from Thierry Mugler Angel or Dolce & Gabbana Light Blue) has created a fragrance that pulls together eclectic notes like rhubarb and Granny Smith apple into something that feels at once surprisingly novel and comfortingly familiar. The notes appear in perfect progression: tart citrus is rounded out by the fruity greenness of rhubarb and apple, and the pepper-cedar-amber base is suggestive of an evergreen in the hazy distance. Flash Back is a place you've been and had almost forgotten, now thrust into the present. Notes include rhubarb, grapefruit, orange, pink pepper, Granny Smith apple, vetiver, cedar, amber, and musks.
    • Olfactive Studio is an encounter between contemporary photography and perfumery, between the eye and the nose. This is the first time that perfumers have teamed up with photographers to draw inspiration from their work.
